Lee County/FGCU Aquatics Center Announces Jan. 15 Groundbreaking; Completion Scheduled for Fall 2003
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University proudly announces the groundbreaking ceremony of the Lee County/FGCU Aquatics Center at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 15 at the south end of the Alico Arena parking lot.
The Center is the result of collaborative efforts between Lee County and FGCU, with $4,515,000 coming from Lee County impact fees over four years to fund the total cost of the project.
Lee County Schools, the public at-large and Swim Florida will utilize the Olympic-size pool, as well as the FGCU community and swimming teams.
In addition, the building is designed to be used as FGCU’s third hurricane shelter - along with Alico Arena and the WGCU Broadcast Building - to house evacuees from the community.
“I foresee the community using this facility to a great extent,” director of Athletics Carl McAloose said. “Adults and senior citizens will use it for water aerobics classes. The Swim Florida group will use it to train youth for various levels of competition. Already several colleges have contacted me about using it as a training site.”
Director of Facilities Planning Jack Fenwick says the project includes the construction of two pools, a 50-meter competition pool and 25-yard community pool with diving well, plus locker and shower facilities for men’s and women’s teams, the public, students, faculty and staff. It also includes an office for pool management and a large entrance lobby.
Construction begins this month and will conclude by fall 2003. Architects are Schenkel Shultz of Fort Myers and construction manager is Beers Skanska Inc. of Tampa.
