Black Heritage Month at FGCU Opens with Rosewood Project Exhibition
1/23/2003

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University invites the public to view the Rosewood Project with exhibit designer Sherry DuPree during the opening ceremony of Black Heritage Month at 5:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 27 on the Library Art Gallery patio.

Rosewood, a small, mostly black township in north central Florida, was the site of one of the most horrific racial riots in state history.

In January 1923, a white woman accused a black man of rape and during the next seven days, a massive, angry white mob ensued, destroying the town, massacring several innocent people and driving others into hiding, never to return. The community was largely burned to the ground and only three known survivors are alive today. No one was ever indicted.

DuPree is a member of the Rosewood Foundation and a Florida Endowment of the Humanities Scholar. Her exhibit will be on display through Saturday, Feb. 1.

FGCU’s theme for the month is “Our Past, Our Present, Our Future: Remember, Celebrate, Act.” Other events during the February celebration include movies, art exhibits, a talent show and literature readings.

The Multicultural Student Center, Organization of Students of African Descent and the Office of Student Life are sponsoring the events.

More information about the Rosewood riot can be found in a documented history presented in 1993 to the Florida Board of Regents, online at: www.tfn.net/doc/rosewood.txt , and at the Rosewood Foundation web site at: www.rosewoodflorida.com .

For more information about events, contact assistant director of Student Life Shelly Neal at (239) 590-7739 or coordinator Artia Small at (239) 590-7834.
