First Airing of FGCU Quarterly Report with President Merwin Begins 9 p.m., March 7 on WGCU-TV
FORT MYERS, FL - The first installment of a new quarterly series designed to update the public on the progress of Florida Gulf Coast University airs 9 p.m., Friday, March 7 on WGCU-TV and repeats 10 a.m., Sunday, March 9.
Florida Gulf Coast University Quarterly Report features President William C. Merwin in a question-and-answer format with host Kevin Pierce. The first show focuses on improvements made through change, which Pierce says is so constant that it is challenging to fix in time a picture of FGCU.
“In this program, we will attempt to provide that snapshot, to describe the status of the University today, and to give you a glimpse of where the continuing growth will position FGCU for and in the future,” Pierce said.
Merwin’s introduction mentions the first six years of FGCU’s existence and takes the audience into the present. “It is truly remarkable to see the tremendous advancements here for such a young institution, and our students, faculty, staff and community partners deserve the credit. Their commitment, pioneering spirit and faith has guided the institution’s creation - and its many successes to date.”
Some of the advancements Merwin cites in his opening summary include increased enrollment, new academic initiatives, gifts and commitments from donors, campus facilities growth and transitional University governance.
“I’ve briefly described for you a university on the move - with more students, academic programs, campus facilities and student life,” Merwin said.
“Maintaining this momentum is critical to our future and it takes resources to meet the rapid growth seen in the student demand for Florida Gulf Coast University. The 2003 session of the Florida Legislature will be vitally important if we are to adequately meet our growth needs of today and tomorrow. Funding is critical,” Merwin said.
Merwin answers specifically questions about the recently-adopted Amendment 11 to the Florida Constitution, how FGCU stands to fare under the proposed state budget, expected student enrollment increases, the need for campus expansion, and the new School of Engineering critical to the area’s workforce.
Also, recent major donations to the University, the start-up success of the intercollegiate athletics program and the unwavering academic excellence of student-athletes, and recently-completed buildings and others on the drawing board.
“Florida Gulf Coast University offers a dynamic environment of high-quality academics for our students and the entire region,” Merwin said.
