Ribbon-Cutting Celebrates Opening of New Student Union Building
FORT MYERS, FL - The students of Florida Gulf Coast University will cut the ceremonial ribbon of their new Student Union building 4 p.m. Thursday, April 24 and the building’s general contractor is providing 500 barbequed chicken dinners to help them celebrate the occasion.
Located behind McTarnaghan Hall and overlooking one of the campus’ lakes, the building is planned to be the centerpiece of student activity at FGCU with its main attraction being the food service facility with indoor seating capacity for 210 and outdoor seating for 150.
The three-story “Sugden Clock Tower” is the focus of the exterior. It is a chiming, double-sided Roman-numeral timepiece erected with funds donated by Herb and Margaret Sugden of Naples. Because it is electronic, it can be programmed to play FGCU’s Alma Mater and other melodies.
Other amenities include the University Bookstore, wireless Internet access, a ballroom, Office of the Dean of Student Affairs, offices and meeting rooms for student clubs and organizations, a student lounge and a game room.
The building will also house a two-story atrium, large entrance lobby and monumental staircase.
Owen-Ames-Kimball completed the 52,000-square foot building, which was begun in March 2002, on schedule. The cost was $9,680,000. SchenkelShultz was the architect.
FGCU plans to hold a grand opening for the public later this year.
