School of Nursing Receives Honor Society Site Visit Next Week
FORT MYERS, FL - Barry University associate dean for Undergraduate Nursing Linda Perkel will visit Florida Gulf Coast University’s School of Nursing Tuesday and Wednesday, May 13 and 14 as a site evaluator from Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nursing to determine if FGCU will be allowed to form a chapter.
Perkel will meet with faculty, students, administrators and community nurse leaders, and review Honor Society documents and financial records to ascertain the feasibility and support for establishing an FGCU chapter.
School of Nursing faculty and nursing leaders in the community have worked diligently since FGCU opened in 1997 to meet the stringent program and financial requirements required.
The site visit will produce a report to the international headquarters in Indianapolis for consideration by the membership board. If approved, the new chapter will be chartered in November during the 37th Biennial International Conference in Toronto.
Sigma Theta Tau International began in 1922 when six nursing students entered the Indiana University Training School for Nurses and dared to follow a dream: “to recognize and encourage professional excellence, leadership, and creative work; to build, share, and use knowledge for the well-being and betterment of people’s lives throughout the world.”
Today, Sigma Theta Tau International is a major force in professional nursing and is committed to fostering excellence, scholarship and leadership in nursing to improve health care worldwide.
The Society promotes the use of nursing research in health care delivery and makes its resources available to all people and institutions interested in the latest knowledge in nursing care.
There are more than 120,000 active members in more than 90 countries. It has chapters at 523 college and university schools of nursing worldwide. Forty-five percent of the Society’s members are clinicians, 20 percent are administrators or supervisors, and 19 percent are educators. Sixty percent of its members hold master’s and/or doctoral degrees.
