Council for Sustainable Florida Honors FGCU with State Award for Promising Practices
FORT MYERS, FL - The Council for Sustainable Florida will honor Florida Gulf Coast University with the 2003 Promising Practices award in the University category at a ceremony Thursday in Fort Lauderdale. The award is for practices and policies that contribute to a more sustainable future for Florida.
“It is a real honor and very gratifying for a very new university to win such an award,” associate professor of environmental studies and director of the FGCU Institute for Sustainability John H. Fitch said.
FGCU was selected for the University’s efforts in creating an environmentally and sustainability literate university community including a required undergraduate sustainability course and creating a strong undergraduate and graduate environmental studies program.
FGCU was also chosen for demonstrating and conducting research on applied sustainability for benefit of government and business sectors, institutionalizing sustainability progress by initiating an environmental management system for the University and creating an Environmental Stewardship Advisory Council, which gives the FGCU president sustainability input and advice from campus and outside communities in decisions relating to the environment.
“The award recognizes some of the hard work by faculty, students, and staff in implementing the strong environmental mission upon which FGCU was founded,” Fitch said. “Winning in the Promising Practices category recognizes not only the major work that the University has already accomplished; it also indicates that much remains to be done in integrating sustainability into FGCU’s practices and policies.”
Other local 2003 winners include the Bonita Bay Group-Estates at Twin Eagles, The Miami Herald Publishing Company, and WilsonMiller, Collier County and Eastern Collier Property Owners.
An independent panel makes the award recommendations. Fitch nominated FGCU in March as a board member of the Council for Sustainable Florida. Fitch will accept the award at the Sustainability Awards Ceremony 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Florida Atlantic University.
Speakers include Council president Mary Lou Rajachel, FAU president Frank Brogan and acting deputy director of the U.S. Department of Commerce Ben Mieremet.
