Season Opener Highlights Past Shows; Collection of FGCU's First Five Years of Art Exhibits Goes on Display Thursday
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University opens the 2003-2004 Arts Complex art gallery with a survey of curated exhibitions held in the FGCU Library art gallery between 1998 and 2002. The show opens Thursday, Sept. 4, with a reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and continues through Sept. 26.
“Re-Viewing the Art: The First Five Years of the FGCU Library Art Gallery” includes local artists Lynda Braun, Andy Browne, Virginia Bryant, Clyde Butcher, Jo-Ann Lizio O’Brien, Morgan T. Paine, Christopher Poelhmann, Lawrence Voytek and Mary Voytek, as well as artists from across America including Lynn Geesaman, Craig Hobbs, Dorothy Simpson Krause, Julie Lindemann and John Shimon, and international artists Carlos Kunte, Dr. Magnus, Manel Marzo-Mart and Estela Urbando.
“Over the past several years we have shown a broad range of contemporary art in the Library art gallery and while that space was the best we had, it had interesting but significant limitations,” art program leader and professor Morgan T. Paine said. Paine organized the survey exhibit.
“We now have a remarkably beautiful space and it seemed like an exciting idea to showcase these artists who had worked with us in a more inviting venue, both to thank the artists who shown with us in the past but also to summarize for the community the range of artists the University has shown as we were in our start-up phase.
“We have examples, in some cases, of the pieces that were previously shown at FGCU and in other cases, the artists have continued to grow and explore new ideas in their work and are sharing their new efforts with us. We started as pioneers and have progressed to being settlers. The show should be a visually compelling exhibition.”
Admission is free and the gallery is open to the public 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, and by appointment.
