FGCU Invites Citizens of Southwest Florida to Participate in Community Justice Forum Sept. 19
9/5/2003

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University invites the public to join justice system stakeholders at the Community Justice Forum, sponsored by the FGCU Center for Public and Social Policy, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 19 in the Whitaker Hall Sprint Room, to learn more about community justice programs.

“The general public would be interested in seeing community justice as a new philosophy to criminal justice, including prevention, commitment and aftercare,” Center director Sandra O’Brien said.

“Justice system stakeholders have been discussing ways to implement community justice locally and regionally in our communities.”

Since emerging in the 1990s, community justice has represented a fundamental shift in philosophy, joining traditionally separate entities such as citizens, police, members of the court system and social service providers to move away from the mindset of centralized authority.

The collaboration process changes the concept of focusing on offenders to address how crime affects victims and communities.

The forum’s goals are to identify the continuum of care and services for the Twentieth Judicial Circuit including a needs assessment and prevention to aftercare, create a community action plan for juvenile justice in the circuit, incorporate a community justice philosophy, and identify alternate resources for services.

Facilitators include Dennis Maloney, president of Community Justice Associates, senior manager of the Balanced and Restorative Justice Project, and former director of the Deschutes County Department of Community Corrections in Justice, Ore.; Dale Landry, president of Village Architects; and O’Brien.

President William C. Merwin will give opening remarks.

Continental breakfast and campus parking permit are included in registration.

The Florida Department of Juvenile Justice, Twentieth Judicial Circuit Juvenile Justice Board, Lee County Comprehensive Strategy Initiative, and Balanced and Restorative Justice Project are cosponsors.

The goal of the Center is to enhance the community development and social well-being of the citizenry of the Southwest Florida region through public management assistance, applied research, policy analysis, and public dialogue.
