FGCU Naples Center Offers Chinese Art Study Program Beginning in January
9/24/2003

FORT MYERS, FL - A non-credit 10-week study group focusing on Chinese art and culture will begin in January 2004 at the Florida Gulf Coast University Naples Center, sponsored by the FGCU Renaissance Academy in partnership with the Chinese Art Study Group, formerly affiliated with the Naples Museum Friends of the Arts.

Six international authorities on different categories of Chinese art and culture will visit Naples to meet with the study group and to present public lectures. Confirmed speakers include

     Joseph Chang, associate curator of Chinese art, Smithsonian Free Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery;

     Willow Hai Chang, gallery director, China Institute, New York; and

     Yiguo Zhang, research fellow, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

“We’re pleased to link FGCU’s academic resources with the Chinese Art Study Group in bringing to Southwest Florida exciting opportunities to explore in depth the history of Chinese culture and its influence on other Asian nations,” dean of Graduate Studies and director of the Renaissance Academy Jack Crocker said.

The study group will visit private collections of Chinese art in Southwest Florida and the widely acclaimed new wing of the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, which houses a major collection of Chinese antiquities.

The study group also will research and present papers on different aspects of Chinese art, history and culture. The curriculum will enable participants to explore China’s history through a survey of specific art forms up to the present day.

“China is emerging as a preeminent global power in the 21st century,” Chinese Art Study Group chairwoman Anne McLeod said.

“More and more people here in Naples and surrounding areas are seeking opportunities to learn about the art, history, and contemporary culture of China. The Renaissance Academy is the leading center for lifelong education in Southwest Florida, and distinguished outside speakers will add an exciting new dimension to our program.”

The FGCU Renaissance Academy will grant a non-credit certificate to those who complete the course of study and participate actively in all aspects of the program.

FGCU created the Renaissance Academy on the premise that learning should never stop and that keeping the mind intellectually, creatively and culturally active fundamentally enhances the quality of life.

As part of FGCU’s commitment to serving the Southwest Florida region, the Renaissance Academy offers courses both on campus and at off-site locations. The FGCU Naples Center is located at 1010 Fifth Ave. S.
