American Institute of CPAs Selects FGCU Business Professor to Esteemed Positions on Editorial Board, Exam
FORT MYERS, FL - The official tax journal of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants recently invited Florida Gulf Coast University professor and tax expert Steve Thompson to join the prestigious publication’s editorial board.
Thompson, a professor of accounting and taxation in the College of Business, will be one of a few academic members of THE TAX ADVISER’s editorial board, which is responsible for reviewing and selecting articles for publication. The board is mostly composed of individuals from major national law firms and international CPA organizations. THE TAX ADVISER reaches 28,000 CPAs and other tax professionals every month
In addition, the AICPA selected Thompson to help write the tax section of the Uniform CPA exam. The AICPA administers the national exam to more than 100,000 individuals annually who seek to become qualified to practice as Certified Public Accountants.
“Each year selected individuals across the United States are asked to submit questions in their area of expertise. I was one of those individuals to prepare questions in taxation,” Thompson said. “We are given a video and writers workbook from the AICPA’s Writer’s Workshop. I would imagine that our questions are scrutinized by the examination team as well as the Board of Examiners for consistency and accuracy and application to the law. In addition, we write more questions than are selected by the BOE. In this manner, no one person would know entirely what is on the examination.”
Dean of the College of Business Richard Pegnetter described the invitations as “powerful testaments to the outstanding reputation and strength Professor Thompson has brought to our department of accounting.
“He is nationally-known as a tax expert and is one of our most widely published scholars. THE TAX ADVISER and American Institute of CPAs could not have made a better choice. These honors represent major national recognition for Professor Thompson and Florida Gulf Coast University.”
