Local Donor Establishes First Endowed Graduate Fellowship at FGCU
FORT MYERS, FL - Fort Myers resident Joyce Rogaski has established Florida Gulf Coast University’s first endowed fellowship with a $50,000 gift last week and $50,000 pledge over the next few years, which will benefit deserving graduate students in the current nursing program and in future criminal justice and forensics programs.
“People need help to improve themselves beyond an undergraduate degree,” Rogaski said. “Who knows, perhaps one of the recipients will become a doctor.”
The $100,000 is eligible for a 50 percent match by the State of Florida Major Gift Trust Fund, which will increase the Joyce Rogaski Graduate Fund to $150,000 and annually produce $6,000 to $7,500 in perpetuity.
Previously at FGCU, Rogaski and her late husband Emory established the Joyce and Emory H. Rogaski Endowed Scholarship Fund to attract and assist undergraduates in clinical laboratory science, criminal justice, biology, chemistry and nursing, or in a future forensic laboratory science program.
The Rogaskis were particularly interested in helping students pursuing law enforcement against illegal drug activity in Fort Myers.
“Joyce is one of the most inspiring people I know,” FGCU director of Advancement Judie Cassidy said. “She is totally selfless in considering how she can help others. She works hard, plans well and is able to realize her dream of serving others.”
The Rogaskis grew up on impoverished farms in Ohio and did not attend college. They worked hard most of their lives, including the ownership of two restaurants. Joyce once worked as a nurse and Emory was in real estate. Together they amassed assets that they now use to help others.
“When we gave the first scholarship, it was the best day of my life,” Rogaski said. Of her recent fellowship gift she said, “This is the second best day of my life.”
The FGCU Foundation is authorized to accept additional contributions in support of the fund.
