Public Invited to Fourth Annual Smart Growth Symposium Nov. 7
FORT MYERS, FL - The Florida Gulf Coast University Center for Public and Social Policy is co-hosting the Fourth Annual Smart Growth Symposium 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 7 in the FGCU Student Union Ballroom to discuss “Who’s in the Driver’s Seat? Planning Process vs. Politics.” The public is invited to attend.
The focus on planning includes a look at what makes an effective planning process and how the success of implementing Smart Growth principles in a local community may depend on stakeholder collaboration at the beginning and leadership from elected officials to make political decisions at the end.
“This symposium’s issues are crucial for a rapidly growing region like that of Southwest Florida,” associate professor in Public Affairs Roger Green said. “This event also offers a rare opportunity to hear the views of someone who has grappled successfully with these issues in another part of the country.”
“Envision Utah” steering committee member and chair of Utah’s Quality Growth Commission Dan Lofgren is keynote speaker. He will share the process and outcome of Envision Utah, which the American Planning Association awarded the 2002 Daniel Burnham Award for efforts to develop a collaborative process that provides a high level of dialogue between public and private interests.
A panel discussion on various aspects of the planning process from education to incorporation will follow.
The Promised Land Section of the Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association is co-hosting the symposium with FGCU.
The Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council, WilsonMiller and Coastal Engineering Consultants are gold sponsors of the event.
Advance registration is $25 and registration at the door is $30. Registration can be made to Vince Cautero at Coastal Engineering Consultants at (239) 646-2324.
For more information, contact Green at (239) 590-7838 or chair of the FAPA Promised Lands Section Debrah Forester at (239) 597-5040.
