FGCU Announces Completion of Florida's Art in State Buildings Project BR-1021: Alico Arena

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University announces the completion of Florida's Art in State Buildings Project BR-1021: Alico Arena by artist Mike Mandel of Watertown, Mass.

The total art allocation for the project was $100,000, one-half of one percent of the Alico Arena building budget.

The Florida Arts Council, under the Division of Cultural Affairs, Department of State, approved the acquisition of the artwork June 3, 2003.

Mandel visited Alico Arena March 24 for a final inspection of the completed project.

The Alico Arena mosaic murals are installed in the interior lobby on the central, west and east walls. One panel is 17.5 feet high by 26 feet wide and two panels are 16 feet high by 20 feet wide.

The mosaic murals are created with 90 colors of one-inch unglazed porcelain tile and glass tile from both domestic and international sources. Porcelain and glass tile require low maintenance, are water resistant, fire resistant, and extremely durable.

All of the images of athletes derive from the archives at FGCU. Among the FGCU athletes featured are Patrick Stubbe (baseball), Jennifer Santana (women's basketball), Adam Gary (men's golf), and Kristin Foelgner (women's tennis).
