Yegidis of UGA Accepts Offer to Become FGCU's Provost, Vice President for Academic Affairs
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University announces the appointment of Bonnie L. Yegidis to the position of provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, the third in FGCU history. Yegidis will also be a full professor of Social Work. Her contract begins Aug. 2.
"I am pleased to have the opportunity to return to Florida at this point in my career to be a part of the leadership of Florida Gulf Coast University as the University continues its trajectory toward excellence," Yegidis said.
"During my visits to the FGCU campus, I was very much impressed with the quality of the faculty and staff, and excited to learn of the academic excellence of the students.
"My experience as a faculty member and as a senior administrator will be valuable to the University and the community as we continue to identify programs of prominence for the University," Yegidis said.
Yegidis is currently the associate vice president and associate provost at The University of Georgia at Athens, where she is also a professor of Social Work and a full member of the graduate faculty. From 1995 to 2003, she was UGA dean and professor in the School of Social Work, and a full member of the graduate faculty.
From 1977 to 1995, Yegidis held several titles at the University of South Florida in Tampa including faculty assistant to the president, director of the School of Social Work, chair of the department of Social Work, director of the Bachelor of Social Work program and professor.
Yegidis was an instructor at Fairmont State College in Fairmont, W.Va., from 1976 to 1977.
"I am delighted that Dr. Bonnie Yegidis has accepted my offer to serve as FGCU's new provost and vice president for Academic Affairs," FGCU President William C. Merwin said.
"We had a pool of more than 120 outstanding candidates from across the country and Bonnie demonstrated an extraordinary likeness of fit with Florida Gulf Coast University. She will be a valuable addition to my executive staff with her strong academic credentials and academic administration background, especially in the areas of planning, budgeting and academic program development at the University of South Florida and the University of Georgia."
Yegidis is widely published. She co-authored four text books, contributed chapters to eight others and edited three professional journals. She has written conference papers and book reviews. Several juried professional periodicals published her articles.
In the research arena, Yegidis has been granted more than half a million dollars for academic study in the field of social work and she has been honored with several professional awards.
Yegidis earned a Ph.D. from the University of South Florida in 1983, a Master of Social Work from West Virginia University in Morgantown in 1976 and a Bachelor of Arts from Montclair State College in Upper Montclair, N.J. in 1973. Her contract at FGCU begins Aug. 2.
