Public Invited to Fourth Annual Adaptive Sports Expo Oct. 9-10
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University invites Southwest Florida residents with disabilities to learn about recreational resources at the fourth annual Adaptive Sports Expo, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 9-10 at Alico Arena.
October is Disability Awareness Month and the objective of the FGCU event is to increase the public's knowledge of how people with disabilities live, work and play.
The Expo features demonstrations and highlights some of the ways people with disabilities can be active participants in recreational activities and sporting events.
Information on different types of local recreational resources and activities is available and participants have the option of actually taking part in activities, including water-skiing, sailing, kayaking, aquatics, adaptive golf, quad rugby, wheelchair basketball and tennis, and other recreational activities.
Attendees have the opportunity to meet with a variety of local service agencies, vendors and groups involved with recreational opportunities through an informational expo, which takes place in conjunction with planned sports activities.
In addition, October is Physical Therapy Month and FGCU and the Southwest District of the Florida Physical Therapy Association offer continuing education seminars to physical therapists and PT assistants attending or volunteering at the Adaptive Sports Expo. Seminars include "The Female Athlete: Preventative Proprioception" by Eric Douglas and "Assessment of the Shoulder and Elbow according to Cyriax" by Arie van Duijn.
For more information on volunteering or continuing education courses, contact Barbara Westgate at (239) 768-8645.
The event is free for observers but participants in certain events pay a small fee for insurance.
FGCU students, faculty and staff, and community organizations such as area hospitals, vendors, Lee County Parks & Recreation and U CanSki 2 Ski Club, and others are sponsoring the event.
