FGCU Cares on 'Make a Diference Day'
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University students, faculty and staff partner with residents of North Fort Myers neighborhood Palmona Park on "Make A Difference Day," Saturday, Oct. 23 to help others as part of the nation's most encompassing service day.
Residents of Palmona Park and members of the FGCU community paint a house, clear debris and vegetation left by the recent hurricanes, and plant flowers.
Resident coordinator Lisa Smith expects approximately 40 individuals to assist in the effort.
"FGCU students, faculty and staff hope that their efforts will make a difference on Make A Difference Day," director of the FGCU Center for Civic Engagement Linda Summers said.
"The partnership between FGCU and Palmona Park residents will be continued through future projects as well."
Participants meet at 8:30 a.m. at FGCU and caravan to North Fort Myers. FGCU has participated in the national event since 1999.
Observed each year on the fourth Saturday in October as a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors, Make A Difference Day is sponsored by USA WEEKEND Magazine and its more than 600 carrier newspapers, and is held in partnership with the Points of Light Foundation, according to the Make A Difference Day Web site (
