FGCU Hosts 21st High School Drug Free Leadership Conference Nov. 5 for Local High School Students
11/1/2004

FORT MYERS, FL - The Florida Gulf Coast University Center for Public and Social Policy hosts up to 350 local high school students 9:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 5 in Alico Arena for the 21st annual High School Drug Free Leadership Conference. The focus of this year's event is underage drinking in Southwest Florida.

"Up to 25 students and their parents, teachers and group facilitators from each high school in the Charlotte, Collier, Hendry, Glades and Lee service area meet to address pertinent issues relating to their generation and to empower these youth to be good leaders at their school," FGCU Center for Public and Social Policy director Sandra O'Brien said.

This year, the Lee County School District sought to widen the scope of the conference into a regional one and asked FGCU to become involved. Previously, only Lee County high school students participated.

The day's schedule includes speakers who are victims of drunk driving accidents, a question and answer discussion, a brainstorming session on how students can help tackle underage drinking, and a breath analyzer technician from the Lee County Sheriff's Office demonstrating the Breath Alcohol Testing bus, or BAT Mobile.

FGCU, the Center for Public and Social Policy, the Lee County School District, and the Lee County Youth Leadership Forum cosponsor the event.
