FGCU Invites Public, Media to View "Recovering from Hurricane Charley: One Piece at a Time" Art Exhibition
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University invites the public and media to "Recovering from Hurricane Charley: One Piece at a Time," a three-dimensional exhibition of collages constructed by art students from the remnants of Hurricane Charley beginning Friday, Dec. 3 in the Sugden Welcome Center gallery and concluding on the six-month anniversary of the storm hitting Southwest Florida, 3:30 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 13.
The show's conclusion includes a silent auction and raffle of all exhibited work beginning at 2 p.m. with proceeds to benefit the FGCU Hurricane Relief Fund and travel scholarships for FGCU Art Club members.
The art has been constructed on recycled storm shutter plywood and the debris collected by FGCU students who have assisted in the relief efforts in Southwest Florida ranging from Sanibel, Pine Island, Punta Gorda, Charlotte and Arcadia.
The mostly abstract compositions use metal, plastic, glass and natural materials to evoke, rather than represent, the power and energy of the storm that hit Southwest Florida on Aug. 13.
FGCU art students collected a variety of hurricane-created debris from the areas affected and returned to the FGCU Arts Complex to construct a variety of individual and collaborative projects incorporating found, modified and manipulated objects.
Admission is free and the Sugden Welcome Center is open to the public 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, excluding holidays observed by the University.
