FGCU Invites Public, Media to View Fall 2004 Student Art Exhibition
12/10/2004

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University invites the public and media to the Fall 2004 Student Art Exhibition featuring the work of 82 students through Sunday, Dec. 19 in the Arts Complex art gallery.

Student-artists working in ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture as well as digital images this fall showcase their finest work for the exhibition. About 138 works of art demonstrating students' accomplishments and experiments are featured from 305 pieces submitted.

A Digital Salon des Refusť features images of 167 works submitted to the exhibition but not selected for display in the gallery.

"This has been an extraordinary semester for us," interim gallery director and professor Morgan T. Paine said. "The privilege of being in Florida has clearly been tempered by the experience of living through this hurricane season. We have all been reminded that the natural world is not benign.

"This show contains instances of some of our students directly commemorating their experiences and other instances the artists in this show have continued to pursue their personal vision in spite of their specific experiences. These different ways of expressing one's aesthetic view is both healthy and to be expected."

The FGCU art program consists of 100 majors taught by six full-time and seven adjunct faculty members. Course offerings include a range of studio classes such as painting, drawing, design, ceramics and sculpture, as well as art history courses such as art and ecology, 19th century art history, and medieval art. Housed in the 30,000 sq. ft. FGCU Arts Complex opened in 2002, the program is one of the fastest growing visual arts programs in America.

Admission is free and the gallery is open to the public 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, excluding holidays observed by the University.

FGCU hosts special "After Graduation Hours" 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 19.
