FGCU Partners with Local Groups to Restore 800 Acres of Wetlands; Hosts Poster Dedication Feb.25 to Explain Restoration Process
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University hosts a poster dedication 1 p.m., Friday, Feb. 25 in the Margaret S. Sugden Welcome Center to announce a partnership of FGCU, Miromar Development and the Southwest Florida Council for Environment Education to restore more than 800 acres of wetlands and wildlife habitat.
Ecologists from FGCU and Miromar Lakes are working together to reconnect and restore wetland systems to create a more sustainable environment.
"The restoration by Miromar Lakes and FGCU will result in the connection of a large high quality wetland which is typically better than scattered and degraded smaller wetlands when properly restored and managed," assistant professor of environmental education Bill Hammond said.
The restored wetland systems will be maintained and monitored, and provide data for the FGCU environmental studies degree program.
The poster that will be presented at the event explains the fundamental aspects of the restoration process.
