Director of FGCU Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education Delivers Keynote Address at Major Conference in India
FORT MYERS, FL - Sanibel resident Peter Blaze Corcoran, director of Florida Gulf Coast University's Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education, gave the keynote address at the International Conference "Education for a Sustainable Future" in Ahmedabad, India, in January.
The Conference was the first official event of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, which spans 2005 to 2014.
Corcoran, professor of environmental studies and environmental education, has been invited to consult on the Indian Supreme Court's decision mandating that all university graduates take a course on environmental education.
Under Corcoran's leadership, a team of faculty designed FGCU's colloquium. The colloquium is a course on sustainability required of all FGCU undergraduate students. Indian academics are looking to this model for guidance in their own curriculum design.
Corcoran's keynote speech focused on the Earth Charter Initiative as an important component to environmental education and as an ethical framework for examining the consequences of transnational globalization.
Corcoran encourages educators to consider the integrated approach to environmental education offered by the Earth Charter, incorporating peace, social justice, and environmental concerns, into the broader study and teaching of sustainability.
Richard Clugston, executive director of the Washington-based University Leaders for a Sustainable Future, spoke of how the Earth Charter is being put into practice worldwide.
The launch of the U.N. Decade of Education for Sustainable Development comes as the FGCU Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education celebrates its first anniversary with a Barbara Kingsolver Weekend, Feb. 25-26 on Sanibel. The best-selling author speaks in the Center's signature Rachel Carson Distinguished Lecture series 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 25 at BIG ARTS. Kingsolver's lecture is co-sponsored by Sanibel Reads and hosted by Billy's Bikes.
The weekend culminates with the Center's second annual fundraising reception 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 26 at the Sanibel home of Mallory and Peter Haffenreffer.
