FGCU Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education Appoints Four New Board Members; Kicks off First Anniversary with Lecture, Fundraising Event Feb. 25-26

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University President William C. Merwin recently appointed four new members to the advisory board of the FGCU Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education including the mayor of Sanibel Island, Louise Johnson.

Other new board members include education philosopher and author Maxine Greene of New York City, environmental artist and curator June LaCombe of Maine, and writer and activist Terry Tempest Williams of Utah.

"Their diverse skills, talents and networks bring a multitude of resources to our Center, as we celebrate our first anniversary as an organization," Center director and professor of Environmental Education Peter Blaze Corcoran said.

In its first year, the Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education launched the Rachel Carson Distinguished Lecture Series, which features renowned author Barbara Kingsolver, 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 25 at BIG Arts in conjunction with Sanibel Reads. Tickets are available at (239) 395-0900.

In addition, the Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education celebrates its first anniversary with a fundraising reception, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 26 at the home of Mallory and Peter Haffenreffer on Sanibel Island. Invitations are available from Corcoran at (239) 590-7166.

The mission of the FGCU Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education is to advance understanding and achievement of the goals of environmental and sustainability education through innovative educational research methods, emergent eco-pedagogies, and educational philosophy and practice based on ethics of care and sustainability.
