FGCU Invites Community to Research Day, Service Learning Day, Celebration of Excellence Awards April 22
3/25/2005

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University invites the public to attend the Fourth Annual Research Day 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Friday, April 22 in Alico Arena to draw attention to the array of research-sponsored activities taking place within FGCU. This year for the first time, FGCU displays Service Learning poster presentations. FGCU's Eighth Annual Celebration of Excellence awards immediately follows the event.

"Research Day celebrates the dedication and hard work of the students and faculty while showcasing their current scholarly activity," assistant vice president for Research Tom Roberts said.

"Last year, faculty, deans and invited external judges viewed nearly 100 poster presentations. Students from all five colleges presented competitive posters on their research projects," Roberts said.

The free event helps educate the public to the primary difference between comprehensive universities, like FGCU, and other educational organizations that do not engage in research activity such as colleges, community colleges and technical schools, Roberts said.

Following Research Day, FGCU hosts the Eighth Annual Celebration of Excellence awards, 5 p.m. in Alico Arena to present a myriad of honors to faculty, staff and students.

FGCU bestows Faculty Scholarship, Service and Teaching Excellence awards and internal grant awards.

Cash awards include a $1,000 prize for the overall winner of the Research Day poster competition, a $500 award for faculty and staff poster winners in each academic area, and a $200 award for student poster winners in each academic area.

Judges for the poster competition included a member of the FGCU Senate Grants and Research Team, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs Bonnie Yegidis, and external judges from the local community.

FGCU encouraged participation in the poster competition from any faculty member, staff member or student to showcase overall scholarly activities at FGCU.
