At-Risk Youths Celebrate Senior Year, Honors During Annual Awards Event May 10
FORT MYERS, FL - The state-funded College Reach Out Program at Florida Gulf Coast University hosts its annual awards banquet with community partners, school board members and parents to celebrate a year of successes and several graduating seniors 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 10 in the Student Union ballroom.
More than 500 students from five counties celebrate their year of hard work in the areas of academics, community service and special recognition as participants in the College Reach Out Program at FGCU.
In addition, the Southwest Florida Community Foundation is awarding seven CROP students with full four-year scholarships to attend college. The scholarships total $357,000.
"The College Reach Out Program will honor schools and students with awards such as best academic improvement and best community service projects, as well as seniors who are continuing their education at a post-secondary institution due in large part to the College Reach Out Program at FGCU," CROP director Cheryl L. Sington said.
The College Reach Out Program at FGCU identifies at-risk youth and develops individual plans to guide students in grades 6 through 12, including the process of completing a college application and acceptance.
"The College Reach Out Program strives to make sure that financial need is not an obstacle for the student who wants to continue their education," Sington said. "The program also strives to excite students about learning and how a love and respect for that enables them to make their dreams come true."
The majority of students in CROP are first in their family to attend college. CROP helps students attain the goal by setting up tutoring, SAT and ACT prep classes, mentoring programs, financial aid and admission workshops, leadership retreats, the academic competition Brain Bowl, cultural events, summer programs, as well as grant and scholarship connections.
