FGCU Honors Student with Special Service Award Today
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University presents a special Excellence in Service award to student Henry Blackford during the Eighth Annual Celebration of Excellence 5 p.m., Friday, April 22 in Alico Arena to honor his enthusiasm for civic engagement.
Since entering FGCU in 2000, Blackford has engaged in more than 10,000 volunteer hours. He volunteers for the Collier County Museum, Moorings Park and other retirement communities. He has spent numerous hours as a Boy Scout leader, taking youth across the United States on camping trips and outdoor adventures.
"I intend to volunteer for all my life to further my education and life experiences through volunteering," Blackford said.
In addition to the Excellence in Service award, President William C. Merwin honors Blackford with a President's Volunteer Service Award. The national award has several eligibility levels. Blackford is receiving the highest recognition - a lifetime service award.
"This is an incredible young man and he is not only receiving a special award from FGCU for excellence in service, he is eligible for the highest level President's Volunteer Service award, a national award," director of the Center for Civic Engagement Linda Summers said.
The Celebration of Excellence recognizes faculty, staff and students with a myriad of honors. FGCU bestows Faculty Scholarship, Service and Teaching Excellence awards and internal grant awards.
Cash awards include a $1,000 prize for the overall winner of the Research Day poster competition, a $500 award for faculty and staff poster winners in each academic area, and a $200 award for student poster winners in each academic area.
