FGCU Waives Out-of-State Tuition, Late Registration Fees for Displaced Students
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University today announced it is waiving out-of-state tuition and late registration fees for students of higher education who have been dislocated due to damage from Hurricane Katrina and want to enroll for classes.
"We know there are higher education students who have been displaced because of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, and we have decided to waive the out-of-state portion of tuition for any who would like to come to FGCU. In other words, they will be charged in-state tuition rates as if they were Florida residents," President William C. Merwin said.
Merwin and provost and vice president for Academic Affairs Bonnie Yegidis made the decision today to allow the tuition waivers in an effort to assist students whose education has been disrupted. Several other state universities in Florida are considering doing the same.
"This is one small but important way we can help victims of Hurricane Katrina," Merwin said in an employee email.
"I encourage everyone at FGCU to make this transition smooth and easy for any displaced students who may choose to join us."
Further, Merwin said FGCU has space in the University's residence halls for enrolling students who want to live on campus. The cost for housing is the same as for current students but FGCU is also waiving any late fees associated with registration of classes.
Director of Admissions Marc Laviolette is available to speak directly with parents and students about the special admission process.
