FGCU Hosts Author, Environmental Activist Julia Butterfly Hill Nov. 2
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University invites freshmen and the general public to attend a free speech by author and environmental activist Julia Butterfly Hill 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 2 in the Student Union ballroom as part of FGCU's First Year Experience.
Author of The Legacy of Luna and co-author of One Makes a Difference, Hill brought international attention to the plight of the world's last remaining ancient forests when she climbed 180 feet into the branches of a 1,000 year old redwood tree and refused to come down.
After 738 days, her protest to the environmental destruction caused by the clear-cutting of ancient redwoods culminated with an agreement that provided permanent protection for the tree known as Luna and a three-acre buffer zone around it. Hill based her book The Legacy of Luna on her experience of the tree-sit action. The book is scheduled to be made into a major motion film.
Hill is also the founder of the nonprofit organization Circle of Life, which promotes the sustainability, restoration and preservation of life, and We The Planet, a programmatic project of Circle of Life.
Hill's numerous awards and honors have made her one of the most internationally recognizable figures in environmental activism. She has addressed many university campuses, the United Nations and lobbied congress.
Hill's visit to Fort Myers is a joint effort with Florida Gulf Coast University and Edison College. She speaks on the Edison campus 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 3.
The First Year Experience, now in its third year at FGCU, is an initiative designed to assist students with the transition from high school to the university community where they encounter new social experiences and more rigorous intellectual expectations. FGCU freshmen were required to read and discuss Hill's work as part of the First Year Experience.
This year's sponsors include the FGCU Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, College of Arts and Sciences, Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education, and Student Government. Also sponsoring the event are the Estero Bay Buddies and the Division of Arts and Sciences at Edison College.
