FGCU Invites Survivors of Suicide Loss to Connect with Others During National Broadcast Nov. 19
10/31/2005

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University invites survivors of suicide loss to connect with other survivors in the local community and online during the Seventh Annual National Survivors of Suicide Day, 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 19 in Student Union 213.

Designed to provide an empowering and healing environment, FGCU joins 100 conference sites nationwide that are participating in the live national broadcast by satellite and on the World Wide Web from New York.

The event features a panel discussion with survivors and medical experts including John R. Jordan of Boston's Family Loss Project and Gretchen L. Haas of the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker Michael Early of Naples facilitates the local program. Early has practiced social work for more than 20 years in inpatient and outpatient medical and psychiatric settings in New York City and Florida. He has taught social work research at Columbia and Fordham universities and at the Hunter College Graduate School of Social Work.

This year, Early conducted "Coping with the Aftermath of Suicide," a continuing education presentation for social workers and other health professionals at the 2005 N.A.S.W. Florida Chapter Annual Conference and for the Juvenile Welfare Board of Pinallas County.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention estimates that annually 30,000 people die by suicide. All of them leave behind loved ones and friends. For some survivors, National Survivors of Suicide Day is the first time they will share their grief, reach out for support and support others.

The free event is sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (www.afsp.org) and locally hosted by the FGCU College of Professional Studies. Seating is limited and early registration is encouraged.
