FGCU Accepting Applications through Dec. 5 for Teacher Immersion Program

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University's Teacher Immersion Program accepts applications through Monday, Dec. 5 for the spring 2006 intensive weekend program from individuals interested in becoming science, mathematics, special education and elementary teachers in fall 2006.

Candidates who hold any bachelor's degree are encouraged to apply but only applicants who indicate a desire to teach middle or high school science or math, K-12 special education or K-6 elementary education in Southwest Florida will be considered.

The Teacher Immersion Program develops the candidate's knowledge and skill relative to classroom management, best instructional practices and literacy strategies for content areas as well as the psychology of learning, and foundations of American education.

Participants take six courses to earn 18 hours in graduate credit toward professional certification and education competence.

The spring course meets 5:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. Fridays and 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturdays. The course dates are Friday, Jan. 13, and Fridays and Saturdays, Jan. 20-21, Feb. 3-4, Feb. 24-25 and March 31-April 1.

FGCU offers the other five courses in the summer and fall semesters. The summer Teacher Immersion Program is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays, May 30 to June 30. On Fridays, special workshops, research and group collaboration is planned.

To qualify for Teacher Immersion Programs, candidates must complete an application form, provide a copy of undergraduate and graduate transcripts, and have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher.

In addition, the applicant should supply two letters of recommendation describing the candidate's potential to be a successful teacher of moral and ethical character, write a one to two page statement providing the candidate's reason or reasons for wanting to become a teacher, and register for the Subject Area Exam.

If not currently on file with FGCU, the applicant must complete the FGCU non-degree application form and return it to Graduate Admissions with the $30 application fee, and provide proof of residency and immunization.

Students are responsible for tuition, fees, textbooks and supplies for 18 graduate hours of coursework. Students may be eligible for low cost student loans and other forms of financial aid.
