International Team of Future Leaders Visits Southwest Florida
11/10/2005

FORT MYERS, FL - The ACTION team, an initiative of an international network called Initiatives of Change headquartered in Washington, D.C., has arrived in Fort Myers to conduct community conversations in Southwest Florida beginning Thursday, November 10 through Sunday November 13.

ACTION is a ten-week experiential learning and leadership development program that outlines some of the challenges confronting America's communities and local leaders, and explores innovative approaches to addressing the challenges.

"We are delighted to welcome the ACTION team to the Fort Myers and Southwest Florida community," says Linda Moore, local ACTION team coordinator and Florida Gulf Coast University administrator. "We have scheduled a dynamic series of community dialogue events that will benefit both the ACTION team and leaders in our own community."

The pivotal event is the meeting with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers Sunday, November 13 at the Coalition of Immokalee Workers Center on Third Street in Immokalee. The activities begin at noon and end at 5 p.m. The Coalition of Immokalee Workers will tell their story including the challenges they face. They will lead a walking tour of the farm workers' community. ACTION team members will conduct a community service activity in Immokalee.

The ACTION team also meets with the Cities of Fort Myers and Cape Coral elected officials and leaders as well as Lee County commissioners. The culminating event takes place Sunday, Nov. 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Union ballroom on the FGCU campus. Team members will share their experience with local participants who will share as well.

ACTION traveling team includes eight international young adults from the United States, Vietnam, Moldova, Ukraine, Kenya, Argentina, and Pakistan. Each has recently earned the U.S. equivalent of a college degree, and each also has mediation/reconciliation experience. Traveling with them are three experienced team leaders who are active in the Initiatives of Change organization. Visit the Website at www.action.iofc.org http://www.action.iofc.org
