Students Collect Hundreds of Pounds of Food, Water for Hurricane Victims;
Donations Support Local Food Bank
FORT MYERS, FL - Fourteen students at Florida Gulf Coast University meet 3 p.m., Monday, Nov. 21 at the loading dock of the Campus Support Complex to sort and box hundreds of pounds of food and water collected at FGCU to benefit families in Southwest Florida who are victims of Hurricane Katrina.
As of Nov. 3, the students have collected 1,493 pounds of provisions during the campus-wide Thanksgiving Hurricane Food Drive. The project, which began as an assignment in assistant professor Craig Heller's Foundations of Civic Engagement class, supports the Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida.
The students say due to Hurricane Wilma, the food bank needs additional food donations such as peanut butter, canned meats, fruit, vegetables, stews and soups, baby food, water, macaroni and cheese, tuna, beans and rice.
The students placed food donation boxes throughout the FGCU campus in the Student Union, Library, Housing Commons and Academic Building III, and Reed, Howard, Griffin, Whitaker and McTarnaghan halls.
