Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education Staff Members
Attend Earth Charter + 5 in Amsterdam
FORT MYERS, FL - Five staff members of the Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education at Florida Gulf Coast University traveled Nov. 7-9 to the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam for Earth Charter + 5, which marked the fifth anniversary of the initial launch of the Earth Charter at the Peace Palace in The Hague.
Earth Charter + 5 aims to assess the impact of the Earth Charter Initiative since its inception while setting priorities and goals for the future. Conference objectives link the Earth Charter with efforts to achieve the Millenium Development Goals and the United Nations' Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, 2005 through 2015.
Four staff members of the FGCU Center accompanied director Peter Blaze Corcoran including associate director Jim Wohlpart, graduate assistant Donna Roberts, and intern Brandon Hollingshead and student assistant Jessica Solimano, both of whom participated in the Earth Charter Youth Initiative activities including a Center-sponsored dinner in Amsterdam for youth activists from around the globe.
Roberts and Wohlpart facilitated a conference session on the Earth Charter in Higher Education.
Corcoran was involved in various conference meetings in his role as senior advisor to the Earth Charter Initiative including a presentation to the Netherlands' Queen Beatrix of a new publication "The Earth Charter in Action: Toward a Sustainable Future" for which Corcoran was editor-in-chief. The conference was timed to coincide with Queen Beatrix's 25th year on the throne.
Earth Charter + 5 is made possible by a collaboration of the Earth Charter International Secretariat, the Netherlands National Committee for International Cooperation and Sustainable Development, the Royal Tropical Institute and Plan Netherlands.
