FGCU Signs Cooperative Agreement with Nankai University to Offer Joint Business Degrees, Launch Institute of Chinese Studies
12/9/2005

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University announces the signing of a cooperative agreement with Nankai University in Balitai, China, to offer joint business degrees, create executive programs and launch an Institute for Chinese Studies.

The agreement initiates a joint undergraduate degree in business, creates a structure for a five-year undergraduate degree in business from Nankai and a Master of Business Administration from FGCU, starts an executive development program for Chinese business leaders, and launches the Institute for Chinese Studies that is coequally FGCU and Nankai.

FGCU appointed associate professor of finance Dan Borgia to organize FGCU's half of the Institute.

"He brings an outstanding background to the role of director," dean of the College of Business Richard Pegnetter said. "He is an associate professor of finance, has been a Fulbright Scholar in China, has taught several credit courses in China as a visiting faculty since his Fulbright, and has strong organizational, business and leadership skills."

"His first activity will be to organize a task group composed of representatives from each college. He has already met with the dean of the College of Education and the dean of the College of Health Professions to get these conversations started. Dan will also be responsible for developing our specific articulation and course matching for the business degree programs in the agreement, and assisting other colleges in opportunities at both Nankai and Yantai Universities."

FGCU is quickly addressing the start of the executive development program as well. In January, director of the Center for Leadership & Innovation David Kakkuri meets with Nankai's business dean to start the program. FGCU plans to deliver the program in Tianjin in summer 2006 using primarily FGCU faculty and one or two retired executives, such as former Chief Executive Officers, from the region.

Also in January, FGCU hosts a group of university and business leaders from Yantai University to discuss additional association opportunities with FGCU and the region.
Nankai University (http://www.nankai.edu.cn/english) is a comprehensive university founded in 1919. China lists Nankai among its universities with great importance for developing in the 21st century.
