Intercollegiate Sailing Association Votes in FGCU as Member
FORT MYERS, FL - The South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association, the regional district of the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association, voted Jan. 28 at its annual meeting at the University of Georgia to include Florida Gulf Coast University as a new member.
"This is an exciting opportunity for the FGCU Sailing Club," faculty advisor Sandra O'Brien said. "As a member of SAISA, our students will be racing in regattas against other colleges such as the University of Florida, University of South Florida, Florida State University, Florida Atlantic University and University of Georgia. We're in a perfect milieu to have a sailing club and are starting yet another tradition at FGCU."
The FGCU Sailing Club, which has 23 members, conducts its racing from the FGCU waterfront on North Lake and the Edison Sailing Center on the Caloosahatchee River in Fort Myers.
In the first year as a member of SAISA, the FGCU Sailing Club is restricted to compete in only a few regattas that do not count for points. FGCU's next regatta will be Saturday, March 11 at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg.
"This is so we can get into the college racing atmosphere slowly and do it right," O'Brien said. "Over the next couple years we will gain more rights to regattas and will be able to host them at FGCU."
The mission of the FGCU Sailing Club (http://sailingclub.fgcu.edu) is to teach sailing as a sport and recreational activity. The group provides opportunities for cruising, racing and recreation while promoting teamwork, self-confidence and seamanship. Students, staff, faculty and alumni are invited to join.
"The FGCU Sailing Club is looking to grow and represent FGCU in college sailing and needs help to fund the program and accomplish this endeavor, we are always looking for sponsors to help who can be a part of the FGCU sailing tradition," O'Brien said.
The governing authority for sailing competition at colleges and universities throughout the United States and some parts of Canada, ICSA is committed to promoting outstanding sportsmanship and competition at a variety of levels, according to the organization's Web site.
