FGCU to Offer Accelerated Medical Degree Program; Signs Articulation Agreement with USF for Students to Obtain BS, MD in Seven Years
3/22/2006

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University this fall begins offering an accelerated medical degree program that allows students to earn both a Bachelor of Science and a Medical Doctorate in as little as seven years, the result of FGCU signing an articulation agreement with the University of South Florida.

FGCU biology faculty developed the new pre-medicine concentration in the BS in biology curriculum to allow students to be admitted to FGCU and at the same time apply for admission to the USF College of Medicine. Students spend three years at FGCU and four years at USF, allowing them to complete a B.S. and an M.D. in seven years.

"I am in full throttle to get the accelerated 3+4 pre-medicine program going," professor and chair of the Department of Biological Sciences Jo Ann Wilson said. "We are moving forward to provide information to prospective students and will be taking applications."

FGCU is currently seeking approval for the early acceptance, accelerated program from the University's Board of Trustees, scheduled to meet April 18, and the Florida Board of Governors.

"This program allows students to pursue their undergraduate studies without worrying about the competitive nature of the med school application process," interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Donna Price Henry said.

As freshmen at FGCU, students apply to and are interviewed for admission to the USF medical school. In their junior year, students are required to pass the Medical College Admission Test, or MCAT. In the fourth year, students begin studying at USF and after successful completion of one year, are awarded a B.S. in biology from FGCU. Following successful completion of the remaining three years at USF, students are awarded an M.D.

The FGCU program provides students with a sound and rigorous baccalaureate foundation that includes an interdisciplinary curriculum in the chemical, mathematical and physical sciences, as well as a broad basis in the biological sciences that prepares students for continued education in medicine.

FGCU says the new program engages students in seminars pertinent to topics in medicine and motivates students with undergraduate research. In addition, the program enriches students with MCAT preparation, a clinical experience and community service.

Students applying to the accelerated medical degree program must be Florida residents and entering freshmen accepted for admission into FGCU. Applicants must have a high school unweighted 3.7 grade point average and either an SAT score of 1300 or an ACT score of 29. For entry into the program this fall, students must also complete a program application and supply a letter of recommendation by Sept. 15.
