Baccalaureate Holders Encouraged to Apply through April 3 for K-12 Teacher Certification Program

FORT MYERS, FL - Professionals in Southwest Florida who hold a bachelor's degree are encouraged to become K-12 classroom teachers this fall and earn 18 graduate credit hours by applying before Monday, April 3 for acceptance into the Teacher Immersion Program Academy at Florida Gulf Coast University.

Candidates who hold a bachelor's degree in any subject area are encouraged to apply but preference is given for science, mathematics, elementary and special education. The TIP Academy, which is approved by the Southwest Florida Workforce Development Board, develops the candidate's knowledge and skill relative to classroom management, best instructional practices and literacy strategies for content areas.

Unlike noncredit or continuing education programs, participants in the TIP Academy earn a total of 18 graduate credit hours, or approximately half the requirements for a master's degree.

During the summer, participants take three courses worth nine graduate credit hours toward professional certification and education competence. Participants meet 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays, and 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Fridays, May 30 to June 30. Friday afternoons are reserved for research and group collaboration.

FGCU offers the final three graduate level courses in the fall and spring semesters.

To qualify for the TIP Academy, candidates must complete an application form, provide a copy of undergraduate and graduate transcripts, and have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher.

In addition, the applicant should provide two letters of recommendation describing the candidate's potential to be a successful teacher of moral and ethical character, write a one to two page statement providing the candidate's reason or reasons for wanting to become a teacher, and register for the Subject Area Exam.

If not currently on file with FGCU, the applicant must complete the FGCU non-degree application form and return it to Graduate Admissions with the $30 application fee, and provide proof of residency and immunization.

Students are responsible for tuition, fees, textbooks and supplies for 18 graduate hours of coursework. Students may be eligible for low cost student loans and other forms of financial aid including scholarship support for qualified students in special education, math or science.
