Local High School Artists Featured in Artistic Discovery Congressional Exhibit
5/3/2006

FORT MYERS, FL - U.S. Rep. Connie Mack IV honors the best high school artists in Southwest Florida during the opening reception of "Artistic Discovery 2006: Florida 14th Congressional District Art Exhibition," 10:30 a.m. to noon, Saturday, May 13 in the Florida Gulf Coast University Arts Complex art gallery.

The annual show, which continues through Thursday, May 18, is part of a nationwide contest that recognizes the creative talents of high school students.

The show features two-dimensional works by more than a dozen local students. The winning entry is displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year alongside the winning pieces of more than 350 high school students from across the country.

"This exhibition is an excellent opportunity for our region's young artists to showcase their skills and ideas," gallery director and assistant professor of art Scott H. Snyder said.

"Having one's work seen everyday by some of America's most important elected officials and their staff members is a remarkable privilege for an area artist. I am gratified that Congressman Mack and his office have encouraged area high school art students by actively supporting this exhibition."

Every public and private high school in Southwest Florida was invited to submit one piece to compete for the Grand Award.

A jury comprised of local art experts Charles Duaray, Suzy Hackett and Taylor Wells judged the entries.

Students get the chance to have their work compete for Merit Awards and for two First Place Awards, one from each county in Mack's district, to hang in his Lee and Collier district offices.

Admission is free. The gallery is open to the public 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays through Fridays excluding University holidays. Parking is free in Lot 7 for gallery patrons.
