FGCU Honored with Inaugural Award for Excellence in Developing Online Learning
FORT MYERS, FL - A group of five Florida Gulf Coast University employees was honored earlier this month with an inaugural ANGEL IMPACT Award from ANGEL® Learning, one of only 12 winners across the nation, for exemplary work in designing an online course.
Jim Wohlpart, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Scott Karakas, assistant professor of art history, Elizabeth Heath, humanities instructor, Lisa Courcier, course manager for the College of Arts and Sciences, Nancy Edwards, interim director of Faculty and Course Development, and Craig Rademacher of the Great Basin College and formerly of FGCU, accepted the award.
FGCU won the Exemplary ANGEL Course Award in the category of Personalized, Enhanced Learning for "Humanities 2510: Understanding the Visual and Performing Arts," a required, fully online course that was redesigned to optimize ANGEL team functionality.
The course builds small communities in a large enrollment class. All assignments - practice tests, discussion forums, module exams - were carefully designed to enhance learning. Since the course was redesigned with ANGEL three years ago, FGCU has tracked a dramatic improvement in student grades and the additional benefit of increased technical literacy in the student population.
Presented during the annual ANGEL User Conference June 6 in Louisville, Ky., ANGEL IMPACT Awards reward ANGEL users' dedication and vision, and foster innovation and collaboration to enrich the ANGEL user community by recognizing exemplary implementations.
The awards are presented in the categories of Exemplary ANGEL Courses, Exemplary ANGEL Programs, and Individual Contributions to the ANGEL Community.
"We were extremely impressed with the quality and diversity of nominations for the ANGEL IMPACT Awards," ANGEL Learning president and CEO Christopher Clapp said.
"Competition for the awards was tough. ANGEL Learning applauds every IMPACT Award nominee and especially commends Florida Gulf Coast University as one of the 12 winners of the inaugural ANGEL IMPACT Awards."
