FGCU Appoints Sweeney to Chair Department of Bioengineering
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University announces the appointment of James Sweeney to the position of chair of the Department of Bioengineering effective this month.
"Dr. Sweeney is knowledgeable in his field and will bring a great deal of experience to FGCU," School of Engineering director Susan Blanchard said. "I look forward to working closely with him as we continue to expand our engineering program."
Sweeney received a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering from Brown University in Providence, R.I., and a master's degree and doctoral degree in biomedical engineering from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.
Prior to FGCU, Sweeney served as director of graduate training and the associate chair of the department of bioengineering at Arizona State University in Tempe.
Sweeney served on several committees and received various awards for his work with undergraduate and graduate research, and authored several biomedical engineering patents.
He served as principal investigator and co-principal investigator on several grants involving multi- and interdisciplinary research and education.
Sweeney has co-authored articles published in professional journals.
Florida Gulf Coast University, in Fort Myers, Fla., is a comprehensive public university offering a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Opened in the fall of 1997, FGCU's campus houses 21st century facilities and distance learning programs.
The School of Engineering, FGCU's newest academic school, began admitting students in fall 2005. FGCU plans to build a 70,000-square-foot facility in 2006 for the study of bioengineering, civil engineering and environmental engineering.
