August 29, 2006
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University announces the appointment of Robert O'Neill to the position of chair of the Department of Environmental and Civil Engineering effective this month.
"We are looking forward to having Dr. O'Neill join our expanding engineering team," School of Engineering director Susan Blanchard said. "His impressive background in civil engineering, and as an excellent teacher, will greatly benefit our engineering students."
O'Neill received a Bachelor of Science from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, master's degrees in structural engineering and geotechnical engineering from Stanford University, and a doctoral degree in structural engineering from Kansas State University.
Prior to FGCU, O'Neill was a professor of engineering at Roger Williams University in Rhode Island.
O'Neill is a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. His area of specialization is in structural engineering.
Florida Gulf Coast University, in Fort Myers, Fla., is a comprehensive public university offering a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Opened in the fall of 1997, the FGCU's campus houses 21st century facilities and distance learning programs.
The School of Engineering, FGCU's newest academic school, began admitting students in fall 2005. FGCU plans to build a 70,000-square-foot facility in 2006 for the study of bioengineering, civil engineering and environmental engineering.
