FGCU Students Make Finals at the IEEE Computer Society's History Competition
9/19/2006

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University students in computer science recently made finals at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc., or IEEE, Computer Society's 60th Anniversary History Competition for designing a Web site as part of a class project.

FGCU professor in the College of Business Janusz Zalewski mentored a team of three computer science undergraduate students to the finals. The students designed a Web site titled "Polish Contributions to Computing" as part of the senior software engineering project class. Team leader Rick Szatkowski, Ryan Firtell and Richard Chin Quee aim to win the finals. The winning team receives $10,000 as first prize.

"The finalists to this international competition are made up of 12 teams out of nearly 100 from around the world," Zalewski said. "Advancing to the finals shows the great accomplishment of FGCU's computer science students."

The IEEE Computer Society, http://www.computer.org, competitions provide a substantive design experience for undergraduate students in computer science and computer engineering fields.

The judging process continues to Oct. 1 allowing participating teams to improve their Web sites until the best team is announced. The top 10 teams will each receive a certificate of merit from the IEEE Computer Society.

For more information, media representatives should contact Zalewski at (239) 590-7317 or zalewski@fgcu.edu.
