FGCU Hosts the 'Sanibel Writers Conference' on Sanibel Island Oct. 26-29
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University invites aspiring writers to attend the "Sanibel Writers Conference," Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 26-29 at BIG ARTS on Sanibel Island to participate in a variety of workshops, panels, lectures and readings presented by celebrated and experienced writers and teachers.
The conference is from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday.
Attendees participate in a variety of morning workshops in fiction, poetry, screenwriting, children's literature, and creative nonfiction. Afternoon panels include workshops in publishing, collaborative writing, humor writing and nightly readings.
"The conference is open to any aspiring writer who wants to create new work or refine a project already in progress," Tom DeMarchi, director of the Sanibel Writers Conference and instructor in the FGCU College of Arts and Sciences said.
Keynote speaker is author Judith Viorst. She is the author of seventeen children's books and eight collections of poems for adults. Many of her books, for adults as well as for children, have been published abroad. Several of her children's books have been made into short films.
Presenters include celebrated writers Steve Almond, Jonathan Ames, Julianna Baggott, Lynne Barrett, John Dufresne, William Giraldi, Michael Hettich, Jesse Millner, Lyn Millner, Martin Tolchin, Susan Tolchin, and Dan Wakefield.
Robert Gelinas, publisher and editor-in-chief of ArcheBooks Publishing presents "What Publishers Want," followed by 10-minute pitch sessions with writers who have a completed manuscript.
The cost for participants is $350, which includes all workshops, panels, lectures and readings. Registration is limited to 150 participants on a first come, first serve basis. Registration forms are available at http://www.fgcu.edu/siwc/SaniibelConferenceRegistrationForm.doc.
For an additional $50, participants can meet privately with a writer or editor to discuss a maximum of 10 pages of a pre-submitted manuscript. Space is limited for individual manuscript consultations.
