FGCU Invites Public, Media to Attend 'Journey to Stewardship: Repairing Crime, Building Community' Forum Sept. 28

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University invites the public and media to attend the public forum "Journey to Stewardship: Repairing Harm, Reducing Crime, Building Community" 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 28 at the Student Union ballroom.

The purpose of the forum is to familiarize participants with the civic engagement service model and community restorative justice principles and practices, and to converse in proactive dialogue about civic engagement and restorative justice.

The forum begins 8:30 a.m., with registration followed by a welcome from President William C. Merwin, 9 a.m. in the Student Union ballroom.

Keynote speaker Dennis Maloney, president of Community Justice Associates and faculty member at Oregon State University, will speak on "A Journey to Stewardship through Service Centered Mentoring."

Other speakers include associate professor of Public Affairs and director of the Institute for Youth and Justice Studies at FGCU Sandra O'Brien; professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice and director of the Community Justice Institute at Florida Atlantic University Gordon Bazemore; and president of Village Architects Inc., Dale Landry.

Florida Gulf Coast University facilitators include assistant to the President and University Ombudsman Charles McKinney, and director of Institutional Equity and Compliance Cheryl Seals-Gonzalez.

Florida Gulf Coast University, The Balanced and Restorative Justice Project, The News-Press, Lee County Sheriffs Office, and Workforce Development Board are sponsoring the forum.

Supporters of the forum are Florida Department of Juvenile Justice and the Lee County branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or NAACP.
