FGCU Hosts Seminar Oct. 23 to Discuss Finding a Balance Between Human Health and Environmental Concerns

FORT MYERS, FL - The Florida Gulf Coast University Biotechnology Seminar Series invites members of the public, healthcare community and media to "Finding a Balance Between Human Health and Environmental Concerns: Should There Be a Worldwide Ban on DDT?" 11:00 a.m., Monday, Oct. 23 in Student Union 213 to discuss the use of DDT in developing nations with high and rising incidences of malaria to protect human populations and balancing environmental concerns.

The free seminar features speaker Jacqueline Cattani, professor of Global Health and director of the Center for Biological Defense in the College of Public Health at the University of South Florida.

Cattani earned her Ph.D. in epidemiology in 1984, and a Master of Public Health in epidemiology in 1980 from the University of California, Berkeley. She earned a Master of Arts in economics from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1976.

She currently serves as consultant to the Armed Forces Epidemiological Board. She has served on many National Institute of Health review panels for research and training on infectious diseases as well as various task forces addressing specific aspects of malaria control in disease endemic countries.

Cattani was a faculty member in the Department of Tropical Public Health at the Harvard School of Public Health and has made significant contributions to the field of tropical public health over the course of her career.

The seminar is co-sponsored by the Anthropology Club at FGCU.
