Florida Gulf Coast University Student Government Hosts Petra Nemcova

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University Student Government Association hosts Petra Nemcova, 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 30 at the Student Union ballroom as the first speaker in the Talon Lecture Series.

Nemcova's message of surviving a disaster and being a model citizen relates to the service learning message at FGCU.

The Talon Lecture Series is focused on bringing speakers to campus directed to the interests of the student population.

The Series is sponsored by the Student Government Association and organized by director of programming Scott Stryker. Arrangements for the appearance of Petra Nemcova were made through the Greater Talent Network, Incorporated.

Nemcova is an international supermodel, famed for her appearance on Sports Illustrated covers, who survived the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. Her autobiography "Love Always, Petra" shares her choice to gain from a hardship and make the most of everyday.

"It is up to each of us to decide whether hard moments in life make us weaker or stronger," Nemcova said.

She is also the founder of the Happy Hearts Fund that benefits children affected by disaster. She was named Glamour magazine's "Women of the Year" and Vanity Fair's "Women in the Know."

Future speakers hosted by the Talon Lecture Series include Ben & Jerry's ice cream founder Jerry Greenfield in February. The focus of Greenfield's lecture will be social responsibility, entrepreneurial spirit and radical business philosophy.

All Talon Lecture Series events are free.
