FGCU's Teacher Immersion Program Accepting Applications for Spring Cohort

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University's Teacher Immersion Program accepts applications for TIP Academy from individuals interested in becoming K-12 classroom teachers in fall 2007.

Candidates who hold any bachelor's degree in any subject area are encouraged to apply but preference is given for science, mathematics, elementary, reading and special education.

The TIP Academy, a state approved teacher preparation program, develops the candidate's knowledge and skill relative to classroom management, best instructional practices and literacy strategies for content areas as well as the psychology of learning, and foundations of American education.

Unlike noncredit or continuing education programs, participants in the FGCU Teacher Immersion Program earn a total of 9 graduate credit hours, which can be applied toward a master's degree.

The spring kick-off class meets on four weekends during the spring term. During the summer, participants attend a five-week intensive summer institute. Participants meet 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays, and 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Fridays, from June 4-July 6. On Fridays, special workshops, research and group collaboration is planned.

To qualify for Teacher Immersion programs, candidates must complete an application form, provide a copy of undergraduate and graduate transcripts, and have an undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or higher.

In addition, the applicant should provide two letters of recommendation describing the candidate's potential to be a successful teacher of moral and ethical character, write a one to two page statement providing the candidate's reason or reasons for wanting to become a teacher, and have passed the FTCE General Knowledge Exam or CLAST (prior to July 1, 2002).

If not currently on file with FGCU, the applicant must complete the FGCU non-degree application form and return it to Graduate Admissions with the $30 application fee, and provide proof of residency and immunization.

Tuition for the program is $3,995; however qualified applicants are eligible for full tuition as well as a book voucher, under a State of Florida grant.
