FGCU Hosts Visiting Fulbright Professor from Pakistan; Reception Feb. 8

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University invites the media to a reception for Muhammad Zakria Zakar, a sociologist from the University of Punjab, Pakistan, who is visiting the United States under the Fulbright Scholar Program to speak about topics designed to increase understanding of Islam in Southwest Florida from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 8 in 309 Academic V.

Zakria Zakar, who received a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Bielefeld in Germany, is lecturing on his recent research on "Madrassa, Modernity and Militancy in Pakistan." His public lectures center around the misunderstood sociopolitical role of the Madrassa institution. Other topics Zakria Zakar shares with the public are the cultural values, social class and social stigma in rural Pakistan.

Public lectures are 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 22 in 112 Academic Building V at FGCU; 10 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 15 at Renaissance Academy in Naples; and 9 a.m., Sunday, Feb. 11 at St. Michael's on Sanibel as part of its series: "Christianity, Judaism and Islam in Dialogue."

The Fulbright program, an academic exchange effort of the U.S. government, created "Fulbright Visiting Specialists Program: Direct Access to the Muslim World," to promote understanding of Muslim civilization.

The program provides opportunities for institutions of higher education to host specialists from the Middle East for short-term programs of intensive lecturing and public outreach, according to the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, which helps administer the Fulbright program on behalf of the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
