FGCU Computer Science Professor; Embry Riddle Professor
Receive Over $200,000 Grant to Fund Study Program
FORT MYERS, FL - Janusz Zalewski, professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Florida Gulf Coast University's Lutgert College of Business, jointly with professor Andrew Kornecki of Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, recently received a $217,522 grant from the United States of America, Federal Aviation Administration to fund a two-year program titled "A Study on Tool Qualification for Complex Electronic Hardware."
The project allows three to four undergraduate FGCU computer science students to obtain experience in use and verification of highly sophisticated software applied in the design of digital systems, especially for flight control of commercial aircraft. Participation in this project will help students become more competitive on the job market and apply to graduate schools with established software engineering masters programs such as Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
"This is a unique project which concerns evaluation procedures for software tools used to design avionics systems for aircraft to ensure safe operation," said Zalewski. "It will enable the authorities to make better, more informed decisions to qualify such software for use in developing safety critical applications."
Results from a similar study performed by both professors were published in "NASA Journal on Innovations in Systems and Software Engineering" in 2005.
