FGCU Breaks Ground on Construction of New Academic Building May 24
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University will honor Raymond and Beverly Lutgert of Naples with a groundbreaking ceremony for the Lutgert College of Business building 2 p.m. Thursday, May 24 in front of Academic Building V.
Raymond and Beverly Lutgert donated $5 million last year for the new academic building. A $5 million dollar-for-dollar gift match in State funds, plus previously appropriated funding of $9.4 million, will construct a $19.4 million building for FGCU's College of Business. In the Lutgerts' honor, the new facility will be named Lutgert Hall. The Lutgerts believe the gift will foster future executives and entrepreneurs with nationally viable skills who will lead the economic growth of Southwest Florida.
"FGCU's College of Business was an early pioneer and catalyst for fostering partnerships between the University and Southwest Florida," said Richard Pegnetter, FGCU Interim President, and Dean of the Lutgert College of Business. "The partnerships between the College of Business and external business community have become a mark of distinction for FGCU, and they made a great contribution toward the College's attaining its elite accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International).
"Our community partners have played a major role in supporting the College of Business, and today we celebrate the generosity of Raymond and Beverly Lutgert. Their gift to construct a new FGCU building to house the College of Business provided the foundation from which we leveraged additional State funds to make this dream a reality. We are honored to call ourselves the Lutgert College of Business, and the name will stand as a timeless legacy to the Lutgerts' vision for Southwest Florida."
The academic building is planned for 62,000 square feet and will house $550,000 worth of state-of-the-art equipment. It will be located near the front of the FGCU campus next to the planned Whitaker School of Engineering building named Holmes Hall last week at its groundbreaking ceremony.
Lutgert Hall amenities include a financial trading room to provide a real-time connection and experience for investment classes.
The College's new classroom building is slated for completion in fall 2008. Architects are Schenkel Shultz of Fort Myers.
