FGCU College of Education Offers "World in Transition" Course About the Middle East;
Founding FGCU President Teaches the On-line Course
FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University College of Education offers a course on the Middle East via distance education through the Southern Center for International Studies to begin this fall. The course will be taught by FGCU Founding President Roy McTarnaghan and professor in the College of Education Dorothy Rea.
The "World in Transition" series covers the Middle East in its first course that runs from September 10 through December 12. The course provides an overview of geography and natural resources, religion, history and the development of current political and social forces of the Middle East stretching from Morocco in the west to Iran in the east.
This area of the world is a focal point for understanding many of the conflicts in recent world history. As the "cradle of civilization" and the birthplace of three of the world's greatest religions, an understanding of this region of the world helps to place many issues of the present day in context, especially the quest for oil, the conflict between the traditional and modern culture and the inclusion or the separation of religion and government.
The materials for the course are developed and updated annually by top faculty from the USA, through the Southern Center for International Studies, or SCIS, in Atlanta. Each course contains an instructional workbook and video materials either in VHS or DVD format. Additionally, there are on-line reference materials that can be accessed by students, both as textbooks, newspapers and video clips.
The internet-based course is available for three semester hours of credit or non-credit continuing education. All materials can be purchased through the FGCU Bookstore.
To register for graduate credit and you are not an active FGCU student, go to http://www.fgcu.edu/graduate/nondegree.html and complete the post-baccalaureate non-degree application, followed by registering on FGCU's Gulfline or the Registrar's office.
To register as continuing education (no graduate credit), contact Eileen Regelski at (239) 590-1098 or email@example.com.
